On Indirect Certification of a Thermal
Imaging Devices for Range Through
Their Physical Simulation |

A scientifically based methodology is proposed for obtaining a statistically reliable predictive estimate
of the range of thermal imaging devices (TID) when detecting and recognizing a test object through
their physical simulation – using TID control with parameters different from those of the simulated
TID. At the same time, the maximum value of the lower limit of the confidence interval (lower estimate)
is achieved for the desired range of the TID with a sufficiently high reliability of the results of fi eld
tests of the TID control and their fixed volume, limited by the number of expert operators involved.
The methodology takes into account the operation of the TID in both noise-limited and contrastlimited
mode, includes recalculation of the test results of the TID control for normalized weather conditions
and radiation contrast of the test object and provides the possibility of comparing estimates of the
TID range of domestic and foreign production. An example of the practical implementation of the
methodology is given.
