Effictiveness of infrared and ultraviolet locators in defense systems against MANPADS |

Aircraft often carry navigation infrared locators (IRL) as well as ultraviolet locators (UVL) for detecting missiles of man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) that result in a duplication of high-tech and expensive UVL and IRL capable of finding out missiles. The article presents known from publications characteristics of MANPADS, IRL, UVL and conditions of their employment as well as the results of effectiveness evaluation for UVL and IRL when used in defense systems. It shows that IRL with advanced signal processing are preferable for use instead of UVL.
