HELICOPTER LANDING IN CASE OF PARTIAL FAILURE OF THE TAIL ROTOR
S.V. Bezdenezhnykh, T.A. Zharova, E.B. Khapov, Z.A. Val

The article considers one of the most dangerous and difficult to perform special cases in flight – a complete and partial failure of the helicopter's track control and gives a recommendation to the flight crew that is not considered in The "mi-24 helicopter crew Instructions", which facilitates landing. On the basis of the relationship between required and available power from the speed Mathcad calculated allowable airspeed with slide with varying degrees of failure of the tail rotor (25 %, 50 %, 75 %, 100 % ) on which the helicopter maintains control in directional and non-rotating. To solve this problem, the lift of the keel is calculated depending on two variables: the flight speed and the angle of glide. Based on the results of these calculations, the crew commander, in the presence of wind, can thus choose the course of the helicopter, so that the resulting drift angle compensates, in whole or in part, for the slip angle that inevitably occurs during this failure and is a threat to a safe landing. Theoretical calculations were confirmed by flights on the Mi-24 helicopter training complex. In the traditional approach to land against the wind at a certain speed, the helicopter began to rotate, which means that there was no chance of a successful outcome of the flight. And in the same conditions with the wind on the right at the same landing speed, the helicopter made a successful landing. The pilot selected the wind angle using the DISS-32 instrument and visually. Flights were performed by several pilots and all of them noted a safer landing when using this technique.
Keywords: special cases in flight, failure of track control, steering screw, landing with a side wind, scheme of forces and moments, sliding angle, recommendation to the flight crew.
