Determination of Parameters of Uniformly Spaced Orthodromes at a Given Limiting Distance from the Path

A wide range of tasks require the use of data on roads, rivers, railways, etc., described on maps as lines
of complex spatial confi guration, which makes it necessary to approximate them in the form of lines
that can be analytically described. Such lines can be the shortest arcs between pairs of points belonging
to the path. In the case of a spherical model of the Earth's surface, they are arcs of great circles and
represent orthodromes, completely characterized by the angular coordinates of neighboring points on
the way. The use of orthodromes as path models makes it possible to formalize and algorithmize the
processes of determining both the characteristics of movement along the paths of ground-based moving
objects, and the characteristics of fl ights over the paths of aviation and space assets, which makes
their determination an urgent task. Purpose of the study: to develop an algorithm for determining the
parameters of orthodromes with points equidistant on the orthodrome at a given maximum distance
from the path of movement, which makes it possible to determine the suitability of orthodromes in
accordance with the established criterion. Methods: to achieve this goal, methods of oblique projections
and triangulation were used. Results: a step-by-step algorithm for determining the parameters of
orthodromes with equidistant points at a given maximum distance from the path is presented, as well
as a criterion for the suitability of orthodromes of a path from its bijection to the image of the path on
the map and a test example of their implementation are identifi ed. Practical signifi cance: the algorithm
proposed in the article is based on analytical calculations, which demonstrates the adequacy of the
proposed graph-analytical model for determining the parameters of local orthodromes of track sections
with uniformly distributed points on the orthodromes of the path and can be used to determine the
characteristics of the movement of ground-based moving objects, the use of aviation and space assets ,
the presented model can also be applicable for complicated path confi gurations with an uneven location
of orthodrome junction points, but is accompanied by high computational costs.
