Issues concerning creation of airborne database on terrain relief for various aviation applications including extreme correction of navigation parameters, low-altitude flight, ground proximity warning and display of cartographic data in 2D and 3D modes are studied. The database of SXF files can be used a source of data on terrain relief. SXF format is a standard for writing cartographic data that is accepted in Russia. Creation of terrain relief matrix (TRM) from SXF files is performed via processing of relief isolines layer, areal, linear and point objects which have semantics with altitude values. Moreover an improved method of interpolation of inversely weighted distances is used for creation of TRM. Suggestions on structure of airborne format of TRM of two accuracy levels for polar and non-polar Earth’s areas are given in the article as well as algorithms of coordinate conversion for polar areas developed by authors. Authors proposed to create a terrain pseudorelief matrix (TPRM) on the basis of TRM in low-altitude flight mode, ground proximity warning mode and terrain relief display in 2D. It is proposed to create a shaded relief matrix for display mode with shading. Developed methods and algorithms allow to create an airborne database on terrain relief for the whole Earth for aviation application.
