The problem of altitude measurement of aircraft flying at a low-altitude above wa-ter surface is discussed in this article. An overview of basic aeronautical altimeters and other range measurement systems is given here. The limitations related to the measurement of short-distance to the water surface are shown. The possibility of using the modern technology of computer vision is analyzed. The main factors determining the appearance of images of water surface are presented. The influ-ence of roughness of the water surface is analyzed in detail. The block diagram of an active stereoscopic computer vision system designed to measure the spatial position of the object relative to the water surface is presented. The algorithm of the system is also described. The result of the selection of necessary light elements is given. The hardware and software of the developed system are described. Ex-perimental results are presented.
