AIRBORNE COMPLEXES FOR LASER COUNTERMEASURES TO MANPADS |

At present shoulder-launched missiles known as MANPADS (Man-Portable Air-Defence Systems) are a main threat to military and especially commercial aviation. Using unclassified literature, this article presents characteristics of MANPADS, missile warning systems, airborne lasers and pointer/trackers for countermeasures to missiles. Special attention is devoted to the characteristics that are more important for evaluation of countermeasures effectiveness. Then it’s followed by lacking at present methods for probability evaluation of hitting attacking missiles and calculation of response time required for attaining a success in missile countermeasures.
